Board of Directors

The Board of Directors is the governing body of The Reading Connection.  Board members' primary purpose is to help TRC fulfill its mission to serve at-risk families and their children by creating environments that encourage reading.  Seven to 20 members are elected for three-year terms.

As a parent, child advocacy attorney, library activist and read-aloud volunteer, I see books as powerful weapons in the fight against boredom and poverty.  I'm excited to work with the TRC Board, promoting literacy-rich families, one story at a time.

Kit Ballenger, Chair

Reading should be an important part of every childhood -- it provides enjoyment, education, and opportunity.  It's an honor to be part of an organization that creates reading environments for so many children who might otherwise not have them.

Jeff Bucher

Director, Finance, The Advisory Board Company

I am inspired by the dedication of staff, volunteers and fellow board members who work tirelessly to fulfill our mission to bring a love of books to at-risk children and families. I feel privileged to be part of an organization that opens doors and can help shape the future academically, socially and emotionally for these children and their families.

Lynn Cannon

Social Learning Consultant, Ivy School

Reading can uplift the spirit, broaden the mind and build bridges between people.  I am proud to help promote childhood literacy through The Reading Connection.

Sharon Gibson

Director of Annual Funds, Sidwell Friends School

As a Read-Aloud volunteer since 2001, I wholeheartedly believe in TRC’s mission to improve the lives of at-risk children through literacy.  Instilling a passion for reading in the lives of the children we serve will open doors for our community, state, nation and the world.

Louisa Jones

Senior Project Manager, ICF Internatioinal

I enjoy the challenge of providing a framework within which our amazing volunteers and dedicated staff can further the mission of TRC to provide literacy-rich environments and motivation for reading for at-risk children and families.

Ralph D. Kidder

Vice President, Financial Affairs & Treasurer, Marymount University

I am fortunate to serve on the Board of an organization that encourages children to read and provides programs that promote families reading together.  By fostering a love for reading, I know that The Reading Connection is opening the door of knowledge and opportunity in many children's lives.

Danielle McCoy

Associate General Counsel, Fannie Mae

It is a privilege to be part of an organization devoted to helping children learn to love reading. My hope is that the children will also learn to love learning and, through education, enjoy a brighter future.

Jenny McIntyre

Chief Counsel, The Boeing Company

As a father of three young children I understand the importance of reading and the effect it has on a child's development.  Fostering a love of reading in a young child is a gift that plays infinite dividends for the entire life of a person.

John McLoughlin

Director, Communications & Media, Acumen Solutions

The amazing staff and volunteers at TRC bring hope to children through reading.  Each time a child has the opportunity to read means they are one step closer to having a brighter future, and I feel honored to help make that happen.

Carol Shen

Director, Learning & Development, Corporate Executive Board

I'm a board member because I believe every child deserves at least one route to success. For most of the kids TRC helps, that route may only come through getting an education, and education starts early on with reading.

Mike Welch

Associate, Jones Day

The Reading Connection positively affects so many children in the DC area. I have seen firsthand how TRC can give a child the gifts of companionship, a great story and a book of his or her own.  I am happy to be part of this amazing group of people.
